If you’re looking for the moment one team “wins a set” in American football, you won’t find one: the sport doesn’t use sets as a unit of competition. What can sound like a set is usually a series of downs—the offense’s chance to move the ball—or a longer stretch of possession called a drive. Games … Read more

American football does not use rounds in the way boxing does. A game is divided into quarters, and the score comes from points earned through plays—not from winning a particular quarter. If you’re looking at a scoreboard or trying to follow a drive, the key is knowing what each scoring play is worth. First, a … Read more

A football game can end 24–21, but that final score is only the most visible part of its record. The official result also shows when the points were scored, how each scoring play happened, and which statistics help explain the outcome. Knowing how those pieces fit together makes a box score or game report much … Read more

A quarterback throws for 300 yards, a running back breaks a team record, and the broadcast flashes a number on screen. A football field can look ready long before it is safe to play on. Beneath the yard lines, grounds crews are managing drainage, firmness, traction and dozens of small details that affect how players accelerate, cut and tackle. Preparing the surface is a season-long job, with a final round of checks before every kickoff. It … Read more

A football game may show 0:00 on the scoreboard while the play is still unfolding—or the clock may stop even though the ball has just gone out of bounds. Those moments make more sense once you separate the game clock from the play clock and know when each one runs. How long is a football … Read more

A flag does not always mean “back up 10 yards.” The result depends on what happened, when it happened, where the foul occurred and whether the offended team wants to accept the penalty. That is why a short gain can turn into a first down—or a promising play can be wiped away entirely. Here’s how … Read more
