A receiver can make the same catch on the same sideline and have it ruled complete in college but incomplete in the NFL. That is one of the clearest signs that “amateur football rules” are not one single rulebook: the NFL, college football, high school, and youth leagues each have their own codes. The basic … Read more

A team can dominate the clock, move the ball downfield and still lose possession in a split second. A tipped pass, a fumble or a failed fourth-down play can hand the ball to the opponent—and change the whole game. The basic idea is simple: one team has the ball and tries to score, while the … Read more

A team can finish the regular season with a strong record and still have to win on the road in January. Another might scrape into the postseason as a low seed, then knock off a division champion. That’s the appeal—and the pressure—of the NFL playoffs: one loss ends the run. The NFL uses a single-elimination … Read more

A player does not earn a Super Bowl place by leading the league in touchdowns, and a college star cannot reach the College Football Playoff on individual performance alone. In American football, qualification usually works at two levels: a team earns a place in a competition, then eligible players make that team’s roster. A few … Read more

A flag hits the turf, players look toward the nearest official, and the referee makes a signal that tells the whole stadium what happened. A Saturday afternoon college game and a Sunday NFL game may look familiar on the surface, but they belong to very different competitions. The teams are built differently, the seasons lead to different kinds of championships, and even a few core rules can change the way a game unfolds. Here’s how the main American football … Read more

A football game can swing in a single snap: a quarterback throws an interception, a runner loses the ball, or an offense comes up short on fourth down. That shift from one team’s offense to the other’s is often called a changeover or change of possession. “Changeover” is informal language, though; the rules describe the … Read more

A catch at the sideline, a fumble in traffic or a runner who may have reached the goal line can turn a football game in an instant. When the call looks wrong, a team may be able to ask for a closer look—but challenges are limited, and not every decision can be reviewed. In the … Read more

A coach’s red flag can look like a last-ditch protest, but in American football it is a formal request to check a specific play on video. The coach must act quickly, the play must be eligible for review, and the team may pay for a failed challenge with a timeout. Here’s how the process works, … Read more
