The earliest American football players took the field with almost none of the protection fans associate with the game today. A leather ball, sturdy clothes and tough shoes were the basics; helmets and pads arrived later, unevenly and often in response to the game’s growing physical toll. A game that began with little protective gear … Read more

A football helmet and shoulder pads are the obvious pieces of American football gear, but they are only part of what a player needs. Properly fitted equipment matters just as much as having the right items: pads that shift or cleats that do not suit the field can affect comfort, movement and safety. What you … Read more

Your first football practice can feel like a gear check before it feels like a game. The essentials are straightforward, but the right fit matters: loose pads can shift on contact, and a helmet that looks about right may still be the wrong size. What you need also depends on whether you’re playing tackle or … Read more

A professional football player can look almost armored before kickoff, but every piece of equipment has a specific job—and the setup changes with the position.
